Samsung has announced that it has started the production of 3D V-NAND memories at the new plant in Pyeongtaek, which has cost no less than 13.000 million dollars.
Currently one of the biggest problems in the hardware market is the situation of NAND Flash memories, where there is a significant shortage of assets, which have led to an increase in price, due to the impossibility of meeting the orders from large manufacturers. Samsung is one of the largest in the industry and touches many markets, including memory manufacturing and today the company announced that the Pyeongtaek factory, dedicated to the manufacture of NAND memories that has cost 13.000 million dollars, is already working.
The factory will shortly begin production of the new three-dimensional NAND memory chips, called 3D V-NAND with 64Gb each module, due to the 64 layers that are implemented, of 1GB each. This solution should offer a significant reduction in the price of NAND memories as the number of products on the market increases, but it seems difficult to notice the short-term effects, since the stoppage of one of Micron's factories, supposes a 5.5% reduction in world production, to which we must add the problems to satisfy demand.
The origin of the problem is the increasing need for memory in smartphones, which take a large part of the world production. We have witnessed a brutal growth in the requirements of mobile terminals and despite the drop in tablet sales, terminals, especially with Android, increasingly want more memory and the industry has encountered a problem that they did not expect. We will see if it manages to smooth the problems of the industry, although we must be a bit cautious about it.
