The truce is over: the price of DDR4 RAM will rise more due to Data Centers

The forecast for a reduction in the price of RAM memory modules has come to an end, since, due to the Data Centers, the stock of DDR4 modules is again in danger and another price increase is expected.

We closed the year 2017 with an absurd price for DDR4 RAM memory modules, which rose to prices that made them prohibitive and for the price of 16GB of RAM in 2016, now hopefully you could buy half. Everything indicated that this year the price could begin to fall, due to an increase in the NAND Flash chips, which make up these memory modules. This reduction has not yet been substantially noticed and it is possible that in the end we will be left without this possibility, due to the data centers.

The specialized media Digitimes comments that different sources within the industry have told them that the demand for RAM memory modules destined for Data Centers is increasing and this could lead to a situation of shortage of these products, inherently leading to a rise in the price of the modules. The big three, Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron would have increased their production of these modules or would be finalizing the increase in production, something that would not serve to meet the great demand from Data Centers and smartphone manufacturers.

It is estimated that this strong demand could lead to a 5-10% increase in the price of memory chips before the end of the second quarter of this year. Goldman Sachs analysts give more concrete data, stating that 32GB modules for data centers could go from $ 300 in January to $ 315 shortly and this trend does not point to be easy to reverse.

Having the tools and the capital to increase production, we began to think that this favorable situation for brands, which can earn much more money, is not reversed because they do not want to and they have found the perfect excuse, just like the manufacturers of GPUs, which have found themselves in a favorable situation to raise prices and raise more. Gentlemen, they take us all for fools, because it is absurd that the Ryzen 3 2200G costs € 99 and 8GB of RAM cost € 100 or more.
