[UPDATED] Google will no longer give Huawei access to Android, services and updates

Total disconnection between Huawei and Google, which implies that the Chinese company will no longer have access to Android and all its services and updates.

One of the trade wars is about to happen and perhaps something else in history. Any US company has been prohibited from working with any product or infrastructure originating from China. A rather serious prohibition that already has the first consequence. According to Reuters, Google has suspended collaboration at the primary hardware and software level with “immediate” access. This prevents Huawei from making any updates to the Android operating system on the smartphones they currently sell. In addition, this means that the terminals will no longer have access to official Google applications, such as the Google Play Store.

Huawei statement

  • Huawei has contributed considerably to the development and growth of Android around the world. As a key Android partner, we have worked closely with the open source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefited both the industry and users.
  • Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all Huawei and Honor smartphones, tablets and devices, both those that have already been sold and those that remain in stock worldwide.
  • We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, to offer the best experience to all users in the world.

Update 00:22. Own source of The Verge within Google confirm what was said by Reuters.

Update 12:07. «We cannot forget that These systems are designed specifically in conjunction with the Chinese Army," said the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo

Google stops offering support and access to Android to the Chinese company Huawei

It appears that the US company is debating "internally" which services will be excluded, according to a source. What is certain is that the company will close all collaboration and technical support for Android and its services to the Chinese company.

Such information is extremely negative not only for Huawei, but for those who have a company terminal. The Chinese giant is the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. Google's action will affect tens of millions of users, who will be left homeless. If there were a security breach of any kind, there would be no patches on the terminals of the Chinese company. A total lack of protection for users unprecedented in history.

The official statements from both Google and Huawei are missing, but things are looking bad. The United States is increasing pressure against its country's technology companies. Last week Trump raised the tariffs on technological imports at 25%. This week it could also launch new tariffs on imports, in this case against the European Union. Maybe Americans are not so amused by Trump now?

Is Huawei without Android possible?

In the absence of both companies informing of the decision, if it is confirmed that Huawei will no longer have access to the Android Q updates. These updates depend directly on Google and without a license, it would not be legal to access them.

The Chinese company could continue to use the Android base (AOSP) which is freely accessible. The problem is that they would not have access to the Play Store, needing their own store. So Huawei would stop offering Google's version of Android to offer its own version of Android. Basically it would be a separation of the two operating systems.

If the Reuters data ends up being confirmed, Huawei's terminals would arrive only with EMUI and their own applications. The terminals would no longer have Google applications and Google Mobile Services, such as the Play Store.

Richar Yu, CEO of Huawei, already said a few weeks ago that if they stopped having access to Android they would have a plan B. It is logical to think that the Chinese company wants to continue working with Microsoft and logically, with Google. We will see what happens, because users who have bought a terminal of the Chinese march are left helpless.

Origin of this technological blockade

We have to go back to 2018 to find out the origin of what has just happened. US intelligence agencies during Trump's mandate are reporting that Huawei and ZTE devices should be stopped. According to these agencies, the Chinese government uses these companies to carry out espionage. They claim that Huawei is "effectively an arm of the Chinese government."

Shortly after, in December, Canada was requested by the United States to arrest of Meng Wanzhu, CEO of Huawei. Gang Shuang, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China reported that neither the United States nor Canada had provided the slightest evidence for his arrest.

The last step before this was Wednesday, May 8, when Trump raised tariffs on China's tech imports from 10% to 25%. This decree also affects US companies such as NVIDIA and AMD, which would affect their stock of VRAM memories or the assembly of graphics. Intel is affected, as it had plans to bring the production of 3D XPoint memory to its plant in China. And the list goes on. But it is that this week a new decree could be produced that imposes tariffs on European imports.
