Foldable smartphones won't get cheaper for several years
Folding phones seem like the logical evolution of current smartphones. They can increase the size of screens for multimedia content and web browsing, and to reduce the exposed screen area when stuffed into pants, backpacks, and bags. Today there are numerous models of folding mobiles. But his biggest problem is that for now their prices are prohibitive and there is no option for anyone who wants cheap folding mobiles.
Although it is normal that they start with relatively high prices. It is a very new technology, whose use is almost a novelty to sell you a mobile and there is not a great demand for it outside the enthusiast market. Is it possible that we will see lower priced folding mobiles? Yes, but they are expected to take years to reach the market.
At least Samsung is in no hurry to launch cheap folding phones
Leaker chunv8888 posted a tweet that read “Foldable Galaxy A", in which he claims that Samsung is apparently working on a foldable model for its affordable Galaxy A line of phones. Shortly after, he clarified with a tweet that read "But it's not going to happen soon, by 2024 or 2025«.
Since Samsung is a pioneer in the mobile industry, and is one of the largest manufacturers of folding mobiles, it is to be inferred that they will be the ones in charge in this sector. And if they don't expect to come out with a low-priced foldable phone model, most likely no reliable manufacturer will, since foldable screen technology is expensive and leaves little room for manoeuvre.
The leak gives no reason why Samsung's affordable foldable phones could be so far away. TechRadar speculates that it's probably a mix of the natural pricing of foldable technology that is slow to depreciate in cost, and the current chipset shortage that also affects component value.
It is inevitable that one day folding smartphones will be affordable as is the case with all technology. But for folding phones to be of popular prices, time must have passed after their release so that their manufacture is cheaper, that there is demand and software for it, and that their materials are available, among other factors. Above all, it is a matter of waiting and seeing how this technology evolves.
