AMD will show its new upscaling technology at GDC 2022
Image upscaling technologies , which use artificial intelligence to generate a native image at a lower resolution than a game and then upscale it to increase the frame rate or allow for higher graphics quality settings, appear to be here to stay. NVIDIA, AMD, and even Intel all offer these technologies for their graphics cards. AMD includes it as part of its FidelityFX suite , and a new generation of this technology is expected to be showcased at GDC 2022.
The Games Developer Conference (GDC) is an event where game developers can share information, network, and build new teams. For hardware manufacturers, it's an opportunity to teach developers how to best utilize their hardware . AMD, Nvidia, and Intel host sessions at GDC, highlighting the advantages of their hardware and software technologies to ensure future games run optimally on their CPUs and graphics cards. This year, AMD will unveil its next-generation FidelityFX suite at the conference.
AMD is going to renew FidelityFX
At GDC 2022, AMD is scheduled to discuss the " Next Generation of Image Upscaling for Games ." This suggests they have a new game upscaling technology on the horizon. AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 1.0 technology has been well-received by developers, and now it appears AMD has something "next-generation" to showcase.
Several media outlets have speculated about what this new generation might offer, but it's almost taken for granted that it will be FidelityFX 2.0 or something equivalent. It's known that on March 23, AMD will officially discuss its " next-generation image scaling technology ." This technology could be an improved version of its FSR 1.0 spatial scaling technology, perhaps FSR 1.1 or FSR 1.5, or a different form of image scaling altogether. It could even be FSR 2.0 if the performance leap is significant enough. AMD has previously confirmed that it's exploring other options for future iterations of FSR. AMD could abandon the spatial scaling of FSR 1.0 or find ways to improve its technology for better results.
What would AMD have prepared for GDC 2022?
They also speculate that AMD may have created something more akin to Nvidia's DLSS or Intel's XeSS. They don't rule out a new AI-accelerated image scaler, or something that uses temporal rather than spatial information, like DLSS 2.0. They note that AI wasn't mentioned in AMD's GDC presentation.
AMD usually releases its new GPU technologies under its GPU Open program, and the same should be true of the company's new image scaler. All of AMD's Open/FidelityFX GPU technologies are open source, and for AMD to change this would be a game changer for the company.
