AMD Radeon GPUOpen, Open Source Next Generation Physics
We know that the next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft will be based on AMD Ryzen processors and AMD Radeon graphics. We also know that this next generation of consoles will offer Ray Tracing thanks to the dedicated hardware that AMD will add in the RDNA2 GPUs. With the next generation of consoles in mind, AMD has developed the GPUOpen platform to offer high-quality physics.
Despite AMD's initial reluctance to adopt ray tracing technology, pioneered by NVIDIA and Microsoft, it has ultimately had to concede. It will implement dedicated hardware in its future RDNA2 GPUs due to pressure from the gaming industry. Sony and Microsoft aren't the only ones supporting this technology; many studios are also fond of it.

The company has already supplied FMFX (Finite Element Method FX) CPU libraries for the GPUOpen platform. These libraries allow you to add very realistic material physics and warp effects. They have been designed specifically for multicore processors, trying to fully exploit the large number of cores implemented by AMD.

- Implicit integration to stabilize rigid materials
- Kinematic control of mesh vertices
- Fracture between tetrahedral faces
- Non-fracturing faces to control the shape of cracks and parts
- Continuous Collision Detection (CCD) of fast-moving objects
- Restrictions for solving contacts and linking objects together
- Limitations for deformation
- Dynamic control of the material parameters of the tetrahedron
- Support to deform a plaster mesh using the tetrahedral mesh
Although these technologies could have been developed for consoles, we may see them in the PC market. An open technology, as always when AMD creates a technology, for whoever wants to implement it without having to pay royalties.
