Google begins to distribute Google Assistant to the majority of Chromebooks on the market. Many laptops already have the option of having the help of one of the most comprehensive voice assistants.
Google has begun rolling out Chrome OS 77, making the Google Assistant widely available to devices running the operating system. Voice AI used to be exclusive to the Pixel, though bolder users have been able to enable it as a hidden feature for a while if they’re on one of the Chrome OS beta channels. The latest version of the platform makes the Assistant available on most Chromebooks. All users need to do to use it is say “Hey Google” or click the Assistant logo from the taskbar.
In addition, the new version allows users to control the audio from one place. For example this allows the device to be muted if, for example, a video suddenly starts playing from one of many tabs. Those controls can be easily accessed by clicking in the lower right corner of the screen. It is now also easier for parents to add screen time for their children within the Family Link app if they have been exceptionally well behaved, one of the what's new in Android 10.
Virtual assistant on laptops
The updated platform also makes it easier to send web pages to other devices, which was a feature that launched with Chrome version 77 earlier this month. All users need to do is click on the address bar and choose “Send to device.” Chrome OS 77 also comes with battery-saving measures that shut down the device after three days of standby. It’s a power saver, technically, albeit in a very extreme context.
Google announcements say the update will roll out progressively over the next few days. Those who haven't received it yet should reach their devices soon enough.
