Intel is already working on drivers for the Arc Battlemage in Lunar Lake for Linux
According to a report from Phoronix, Intel is developing a new driver for its upcoming Xe2 graphics architecture, which will be used in Lunar Lake CPU series. The Xe2 architecture is based on the upcoming series of graphics cards Arc Battlemage, which will be released with a series of desktop graphics cards.
For Lunar Lake, this series of CPUs has a planned release at a later date. Intel's embedded GPUs are now one product cycle behind their desktop GPU counterparts. The upcoming Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake CPUs will use the Xe-LPG series, derived from the Alchemist architecture. But for Lunar Lake, a series of low-power GPUs for low-power notebooks, it is expected to incorporate the Xe2 architecture.
Intel is already preparing Linux drivers for the Arc Battlemage
Xe2 GPUs, known as Intel Arc Battlemage to the gaming industry, are expected to arrive in the next year, which will be followed by integrated graphics solutions in APUs between 2024 and 2025. Intel has already introduced the first changes to its open source graphics driver for Linux, as Phoronix has discovered, which indicates that they are already preparing them, but they are not even remotely final drivers.
Recent revelations suggest that Lunar Lake's integrated GPU will incorporate 64 Xe2 execution units, equivalent to 8 Xe cores. This configuration is comparable to Arc A380 desktop GPUs or A370M mobile GPUs based on benchmarks.
Although development of open source drivers for Lunar Lake has just begun, Intel has a lot of work ahead of it. Intel has confirmed that it aims to have the first Lunar Lake CPUs ready for manufacturing in the second half of next year.
