Microsoft completely abandons Windows Mixed Reality

Mixed Reality promised to be a way to eliminate the worst of reality. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, by offering an immersive environment of information and applications without isolating the owner from the rest of the world. For now, Apple seems very willing to do this with their apple vision pro, but Microsoft does not see it so clearly. This is why in the most recent Windows updates, it is announced that Microsoft is abandoning Windows Mixed Reality.

Windows Mixed Reality wanted to build a virtual reality ecosystem for PC using Windows as a base. But as is usual in the technology sector, it has not been widely accepted and is going to be eliminated.

Windows Mixed Reality finally leaves Windows

For a while, there were virtual reality headsets for Windows Mixed Reality, but most of them were released between 2017 and 2021. That's two years without having new virtual reality headsets for the software, so for all practical purposes, it is completely abandoned. It is believed that part of the reason it has not been successful is because SteamVR It was more successful and had a wider selection of games, as well as being compatible with more virtual reality headsets.

Support for Windows Mixed Reality headsets with SteamVR will also be dropped, as well as the dedicated Mixed Reality Portal app. The helmets HoloLens 2 are the only Windows Mixed Reality device currently available. But since its launch until today, HoloLens 3 has been canceled, with no plans to release another successor model. It didn't even have real support in its console division, being promoted for the Xbox One X when it still had a code name but quietly abandoned.

With all this, Microsoft's plans to offer Virtual Reality are abandoned. But seeing that both Apple and Steam already offer their solutions, and even PlayStation 5 has its own, it is possible that it will be resurrected if the market is seen to grow and cease to be a niche for the wealthiest. And we say this because the space necessary for Virtual Reality does not fit in working class homes, and there are houses for the upper classes that can afford to have one. Metaverse room.
