Synology Introduces DSM 7.2 to Ensure Immutable Storage
Synology has announced the release of its DSM 7.2 operating system. The new version of DiskStation Manager offers improvements to address IT challenges.
Those enhancements include immutable storage and backup, full volume encryption, performance enhancements, tighter access controls, and storage planning capabilities.
Immutable storage and backup
Immutable storage and license-free backup have their place in DSM 7.2, through WriteOnce shared folders, and immutable Shadow Copies. WORM technology enables organizations to protect their data from malicious attacks, tampering, and accidental deletion by creating an unalterable copy of their data. This capacity is crucial for many sectors, such as health, finance and public administration, which must adhere to strict data retention policies.
Fast Full Volume Encryption encrypts data at rest, including shared folders, LUNs, and packet data. This feature ensures data privacy and security in the event of a security breach or theft, as the data stored inside becomes unreadable without the decryption key. In addition, it is compatible with KMIP to simplify and centralize key management.
Full Volume Encryption provides a write performance boost of up to 48% compared to applying Shared Folder Encryption to all eligible data stored on a volume. Between the two modes, users now have efficient options to protect specific data or entire file systems against unauthorized access.
DSM 7.2 also adds support for M.2 NVMe SSD storage volumes on more systems. Thus, a more flexible use of the M.2 NVMe slots integrated in the devices is possible. SSD deduplication is enhanced with the implementation of inline Block Zero Elimination, thus reducing deduplication times by up to 25% by reducing the amount of data that must be stored.
Adaptive multi-factor authentication is coming to Synology systems. This provides a security approach by evaluating various contextual factors. These include device, location, time of day, and security, as well as user behavior to determine if additional verification is necessary.
Active Insight now includes storage capacity forecasting. This new feature helps IT administrators and MSPs anticipate future storage needs. This is because it provides insight into your current storage usage and allows you to predict future capacity requirements. In addition, DSM system notifications now have more flexible notification settings, and support for Microsoft Teams and LINE.
