GitHub shuts down the youtube-dl repository, the end of the largest open source repository?

Some time ago Microsoft acquired GitHub, the world's largest open source repository on the web. Many code creators who upload their developments to this website expressed their concern. It seems your fears are borne out, as GitHub has removed 18 repositories that about youtube-dl. These Python libraries are used by tools and services for downloading YouTube videos.

The reasons why these repositories have been closed would be due to a legal request from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The closure has been requested with respect to copyright. RIA requested by letter to GitHub on October 23 to close the youtube-dl repositories and the 17 copies of it.

Controversial closure of GitHub of youtube-dl repositories

The clear purpose of this source code is to (i) circumvent technology protection measures used by authorized streaming services such as YouTube, and (ii) reproduce and distribute music videos and sound recordings owned by our member companies without authorization for such use. .

Indicates the RIAA letter

Although youtube-dl can be used to download copyrighted content, it can also be used to download other content. The youtube-dl code does not infringe anything that has to do with copyright. Just as torrenting applications are not illegal, this code absolutely does not violate anything either.

GitHub can theoretically only remove repositories that may explicitly violate copyright. Anyone can use the code to develop the tool they want, it is not encouraged to download copyrighted content.

The RIAA says in their letter that they have found the youtube-dl code in items that can be downloaded with this tool. They put examples of songs by Justin Timberlake or Taylor Swift, among others represented by the RIAA.

Note that GitHub repository closures are usually automatic when a DMCA notice is received. These repositories can be restored after presenting a duly completed counterclaim. Indicate that ending a software of which there are thousands of copies is not easy, since uploading it again is very simple.

Set this move as a dangerous precedent, as GitHub's removal of youtube-dl could result in the closure of many other repositories. You could go for torrent software repositories, chatbot tools, or open source browser add-ons.
