Amazon Prime Video will introduce a sound mode to better hear the dialogues

Who does not happen to that, due to how the audio mix of a movie or series is, it is difficult to hear the dialogues? This has been noticed by Amazon Prime Video, which has developed a sound mode specialized in enhancing dialogue.

It is intended as an accessibility option. But this will most likely end up being used by more people who don't have hearing problems, and simply want to hear better what is being said in the dialogues.

Amazon wants you to better hear dialogue in Amazon Prime Video movies and series

Amazon has described how it works in a blog post:

Dialogue Boost analiza el audio original de una película o serie e identifica los puntos en los que el diálogo puede ser difícil de oír por encima de la música de fondo y los efectos. Se aíslan los patrones del habla y se mejora el audio para que el diálogo sea más claro.

Not all content will be able to benefit from this feature, at least for now. Amazon says that “has been initially released on select Amazon Originals worldwide» like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Big Sick. And we can understand other original series taking priority, like The Boys.

A survey conducted in 2022 found that 50 percent of the 1.260 American viewers "they watch content with subtitles most of the time«Many of them cited that they found it difficult to understand dialogue in movies and television shows.

Although it may be a sound mixing problem, at Ars Technica they say that the use of built-in speakers in televisions has grown. And that it is normal for television manufacturers to introduce configurations to sell their products. This means that audio professionals who master and encode audio for distribution over streaming networks have their hands full, with some programs prioritizing high-end setups. Not testing for dynamic range on cheaper speakers can leave owners of lesser systems with mixed audio.

This would be one reason why many people buy one. Sound bar, because the speakers of your television do not have good quality. Amazon's new feature should, in theory, work on any device, even if it doesn't support dialog enhancement. They have not announced when it will expand to more content, but we can expect them to do so at least in their own productions.
