TSMC is already building its 5nm chip factory

The Taiwanese company TSMC has begun the construction of a new factory, to manufacture 5nm chips, within the South Taiwan Science Park, which will be the same space where in 2020 the factory responsible for making 3nm chips will be built.

Morris Chang, who is President of TSMC, will preside over the next step of downsizing of transistors, before he retires. TSMC is the company that right now has the advantage in terms of manufacturing chips based on the 7nm process, something that has allowed the almighty Samsung to pass. This has allowed the Taiwanese company to win a succulent contract, to make the 7nm processors that are integrated in the next iPhone. The next step to remain the industry leader is to have the infrastructure to manufacture 5nm processors.

The company has set itself the goal of starting to test the 5nm manufacturing process during the first quarter of 2019 and according to its Roadmap, the mass production of the processors under this node will take place in 2020. The company does not only think In these two processes, it has already moved hundreds of engineers for the R&D work of the 3nm process, a plant that will begin to be built in 2022.

Going down from 10nm is a complex task and going down to 3nm will not be easy, but the company hopes to attract a capitalization of $ 25.690 billion, in order to develop and implement this manufacturing process. TSMC has taken the lead, ahead of Intel, GlobalFoundries and Samsung, something that will bring it enormous economic income, but it cannot be misled either, because the competition is tough.
