Ubuntu 20.04 'Focal Fossa' LTS will begin shipping on April 23

The most widely used operating system in the world is Windows, due to the ease of use of this Microsoft operating system. There are many users who bet on Open Source solutions, such as different Linux distributions. The most used version of Linux is Ubuntu, due to its simple design and great graphical interface. Now Ubuntu, a distribution developed by Canonical, is updated to version 20.04.

Canonical usually offers new Ubuntu distributions every 6 months, offering great support for this operating system. This new distribution is type 'LTS', which indicates that it will have 5 years of support and updates. Something interesting, since if we did not install the new versions, we would be without support after a short time.

What does LTS mean specifically?

The acronym LTS indicates Long Time Support. Canonical is committed to updating, patching and maintaining this operating system for a long period of time. In addition, LTS has a shorter development time, but a longer beta period. More testing is done for this version, focusing on bug fixes, performance optimization, and version stability.

Offering a supported operating system for a short period of time, the software can be a security risk. These vulnerabilities are often discovered over time and without support for patches or updates, the system can be exposed. In addition to posing a security risk, it can also get worse over time.

This Ubuntu LTS version is a commitment by Canonical to update this operating system for 5 years. The company releases a new LTS version every two years where all the developments from the previous two years are rolled up into a feature-rich update. These releases focus on performance and stability.

Canonical indicates that LTS is the ideal solution to improve performance and stability. For more advanced and dynamic users, they can opt for developer-friendly updates every six months. These updates are kept current and relevant with the best contributions.

What's new in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Kernel renewed

The first novelty is the implementation of the Linux Kernel 5.4. It is not the latest version currently available, but it is a version with extended support. This version of Kernel has been implemented in this LTS distribution precisely because of this, its extended support.

Due to not having the latest version of the kernel, we cannot use the new WireGuard system for VPN development. Canonical has worked so that, despite not being enabled by default, it has developed a solution to work on Kernel 5.4. WireGuard is available by default, allowing you to enjoy VRP connections quickly and safely.

GNOME 3.36

GNOME 3.46 version has been implemented for this new desktop version. The new version fits the default themes much better and includes a 'do not disturb' feature. This function allows us not to receive updates that distract us while we work.

Additionally, GNOME radically changes the look of the lock screen. It turns into a Windows 10-like display, using a blurred version of the desktop background. It also shows us the avatar and the user password field for the login. After a long time the Ubuntu lock screen has received an update.
