According to a recent report by VideoCardz, AMD would have a new scaling solution that should help more PC gamers get higher frame rates per second without having to upgrade their hardware. Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) would be the FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology that already exists from AMD, but shifted down the graphics channel so that it can work in all games that run in full screen.
This technology is expected to debut in January. If so, we would very surely see it in the digital presentation that AMD is going to give on the occasion of CES 2022, even if it has canceled its physical participation.
Rescaling technology, at the control panel level
Developers of newer titles are more likely to implement FSR, but this could also find a niche of use in older titles, which are updated less frequently, or in titles sponsored by rivals that may never have FSR of native way. There would be some drawbacks with RSR compared to FSR, but AMD must have weighed the risks to implement and develop Radeon Super Resolution rescaling technology for games.
Even if it is implemented at the hardware level and can be compatible with all games, it would be a somewhat reduced version of FidelityFX Super Resolution as it is not implemented natively. FSR scaling technology needs to be implemented in the game mid-production line so that common game UI and HUD elements are not smoothed out by the spatial scaling algorithm and incorrect results are generated. An example of the problems that this increase can cause by AI is the GTA Trilogy, which had an apparently better visual finish, but when using an Artificial Intelligence to rescale everything and not pass a quality control, many details were lost and many models remained misshapen.
It does not appear that there will be a long wait for the RSR to become official, as it is expected to launch next month. From the looks of it, RSR might be talked about at AMD's CES 2022 presentations alongside the lower-end AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT and RX 6400 graphics cards.
