Call of Duty will continue to be released on PlayStation until at least 2023
Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, announced last week, had a ripple effect, resulting in Sony losing $20.000 billion in market value . The reason is simple: Call of Duty might not be released on PlayStation if Microsoft decides to make the series exclusive to Xbox and PC.
But recent reports claim that Call of Duty will remain on PS4 and PS5 until at least 2023. This information comes from Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, who has provided details about the future of Call of Duty on PlayStation consoles.
After 2023, Call of Duty could leave PlayStation
Jason Schreier has obtained information from those involved, who agree that at least the next three Call of Duty installments will be released on PS4 and PS5 . Phil Spencer has already stated that, as with Deathloop and as will happen with Ghostwire: Tokyo when they acquired ZeniMax and Bethesda, they intend to honor the release and marketing agreements signed before the sale to Microsoft.
This means that the 2022 and 2023 Call of Duty games, as well as Call of Duty: Warzone 2 (scheduled for 2023), will be released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. All other installments will be entirely under Microsoft's control.
It's possible that the 2024 release, the first under Microsoft's control, will take a more conservative approach, launching first on Game Pass and giving them exclusive access to content on their platforms. However, the entire franchise could undergo significant production changes, given that Activision employees themselves want Call of Duty to stop releasing a new installment annually , and they expect Microsoft's acquisition to alter Activision's plans for the franchise.
