Dead by Daylight creators claim to have eliminated the crunch and have no problems with it
That the developers of Dead by Daylight have decent work hours has not interfered with the game. they have reduced overtime to much less than 1%.
In recent months, stories have emerged of high-profile developers who have exploited their position as industry giants to impose crunch and poor working conditions on their employees. Rockstar Games, Epic Games , BioWare , Riot Games … One of the industry's major issues this year has been the treatment of workers, a problem they still need to address, and one that we seem to be slowly taking note of, as demonstrated by the creators of Dead by Daylight.
Bohemia Interactive keeps overtime to a minimum
Rémi Racine, CEO and Executive Producer at Behavior Interactive has posted on their official blog that they may have started by imposing extreme crunch on their employees, but now they have almost eliminated it entirely. And that hasn't stopped their Dead by Daylight game from having constant updates and DLCs with the most popular slasher horror killers. That a game can be kept alive and that workers in turn have time to pick up their children from school.
It all started when they decided not to allow workers to stay whole nights and sleep in the office. He followed up with the fact that they stopped encouraging going to work on weekends, which were not really mandatory and there was no pressure. They could go but it didn't benefit the workers at all as they were fully volunteers.
According to their record, only 0,25% of the hours worked at Behavior Interactive during 2018 were overtime. Doing calculations, taking into account that a worker would spend 40 hours a week to 52 weeks, an average worker would have done only 5 hours and 12 extra minutes that year. For those hours among all workers to reach the time that a normal worker would employ, Behavior Interactive would have to have 400 employees, but they do not go anywhere. Another example that crunch is the result of mismanagement, unnecessary rush and more harmful elements of their work culture. Dead by Daylight is still a big seller and almost every company that makes slasher horror movies wants to be in the game.
