Mortal Kombat 11 developers end up with trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder after working on the game

More than one Mortal Kombat 11 developer got used to violent images. Many ended up in therapy for being continuously exposed to the ultraviolence they needed as a reference.

Mortal Kombat 11 is a hyper-violent game. The offal, blood, broken bones and more have given the franchise a facelift since deliveries on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and now with its most recent installment the violence has reached a new level. But that comes at a price, and developers are paying for it.

Psychological problems, very common among game developers

Stories of the endless crunch they suffered in Netherrealms recently came to light. Marathon days, months in which they did not rest ... The psychological effects of crunch on employees are recognized. But in the case of those who worked on Mortal Kombat 11, they were accentuated with post-traumatic stress.

A developer talked to Kotaku about making such a violent game, in high definition and very realistic. The team needed to use references to embody them in the game and the atmosphere was very little cheerful. That employee commented that on one computer someone would be watching a hanging, on another there were images of murder victims, and on another they would be watching videos of a cow in a slaughterhouse. The team got used to that environment, even the newest workers.

And the crunch along with those constant unpleasant images ended up taking its toll on that worker. He began to constantly have violent dreams that forced him to avoid sleeping for days. He admitted that he needed psychological help and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder as if he were a soldier who had returned from a war by constantly being exposed to violence at work. And it was not the only position that other workers suffered similar symptoms and trauma. Fans of the game will be delighted with the new levels of violence that Mortal Kombat 11 has reached, but all that detail is the result of the sacrifice and mental damage that several people have been suffering.
