DOOM Eternal to withdraw Denuvo Anti-Cheat under user pressure

Last week criticism of id Software for the implementation of Denuvo Anti-Cheat in DOOM Eternal I generate a great controversy. The problem is that Denuvo Anti-Cheat runs in Ring 0 of Windows 10, generating a security hole and brutal performance losses. Marty Stratton, Executive Producer of id Software, has said on Reddit that he will finally retire the anti-cheat system.

This move by DOOM Eternal developers is logical due to the security risk involved. In addition, users have highlighted that the performance of the game after installing the Irdeto system falls to the beast. But it is also that there has been a barrage of negative ratings on Steam.

DOOM Eternal finally retires the Denuvo Anti-Cheat system

I want to provide our PC community with the latest information on a number of topics related to Update 1 that we released last Thursday. Our team has been investigating reports of instability and performance degradation from some users and we have also seen concerns surrounding our inclusion of Denuvo Anti-Cheat. As is often the case, things are not as clear cut as they seem, so I would like to include the latest information on the actions we are taking, as well as provide some context around the decisions we have made. We are preparing and testing Update 1.1 for PC only, which includes the changes and fixes listed below. We hope to have it available to players within a week.

Our team's original decision to include Denuvo Anti-Cheat in Update 1 was based on several factors:

  • Protecting BATTLE MODE players from cheaters, but also establishing consistent anti-cheat systems and processes as we look forward to more competitive initiatives on our BATTLE MODE roadmap.
  • Set protection against cheating in the campaign you are preparing for the future launch of Invasion - which is a mix of campaign and multiplayer.
  • Kernel-level integrations are typically the most effective at preventing cheating.
  • The Denuvo integration met our security and privacy standards.
  • Players were disappointed in DOOM (2016) with our delay in adding anti-cheat technology to protect that game's multiplayer.

Despite our best intentions, player feedback has made it clear that we need to re-evaluate our approach to anti-cheat integration. With that, we will remove anti-cheat technology in our next PC update. When looking at any future anti-cheat technology in DOOM Eternal, we should at a minimum consider giving players who are only participating in the campaign the ability to play without the anti-cheat software installed, as well as making sure that the overall schedule for any anti-cheat system integration is better. aligned with the expectations of players around clear initiatives - such as qualifying or competitive play - where the demand for an anti-cheat system is much higher.

It is important to note that our decision to include Denuvo Anti-Cheat was guided by nothing more than the factors and goals that I have outlined above - all driven by our team at id Software. I have seen speculation online that Bethesda (our parent and publisher company) is forcing us to make these or other decisions, and it is simply untrue. It's also worth noting that our decision to remove the anti-cheat software is not based on the quality of the Denuvo Anti-Cheat solution. Many have unfortunately linked the performance and stability issues introduced in Update 1 to the introduction of Anti-Cheat. They are not related.

Through our research, we discovered and fixed several bugs in our code related to custom skins. We were also able to identify and fix other memory-related glitches that should improve overall player stability. All of these fixes will be in our next PC update. I would like to point out that some of these issues were very difficult to reproduce and we want to thank several members of our community who worked directly with our engineers to identify and help reproduce these issues.

Lastly, we believe that the performance issues some gamers have experienced on PC are based on a code change we made around VRAM mapping. We have reversed this change in our next update and we hope the game will perform as it did at launch.
