E3 2022 will not have a physical edition and nothing is known about an online

E3 is the annual event where video games and much of the technology derived from them , such as virtual reality and emerging technologies, come together in a major effort to showcase their position, announce major projects or new features, and network. In 2020, there was no such event due to the coronavirus pandemic, and in 2021 it was entirely digital with a rather limited website that didn't offer much to those interested. There was a possibility that E3 would return to a physical space for the 2021 edition, but the Electronic Software Association has confirmed that there will be no physical event this year either due to the coronavirus.

The ESA has commented on the case of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, which spreads much faster than any other variant and is considerably less severe. Although vaccines are now available and mortality has decreased, it seems the virus continues to hinder the organization of a physical E3 2022 due to the limitations it would impose on international visitors.

It doesn't look like there will be an E3 2022

Analyst Mike Futter commented on Twitter that he's been hearing rumors that E3 2022 wouldn't happen since last November, long before the discovery of the new omicron variant mentioned by the ESA. He also shared a tweet stating that other consumer-oriented video game trade shows like PAX East and GDC haven't been canceled.

This would suggest that the real reason is that they aren't attracting enough exhibitors to E3 2022 to justify holding a physical event. There's still no word on whether there will be a physical event, either as an interactive portal or reduced to a series of broadcasts over several days, as Geoff Keighley does with his Summer Games Fest.

For those who are looking forward to going to E3 one day, there is still the possibility that next year the pandemic will be more controlled and there is interest in holding a physical edition. And with this, the possibility of introducing changes to the format to improve the user experience.
