The writer of the Witcher books will receive compensation for the sales of the games

The developers of The Witcher games and writer Andrezj Sapkowski have reached an agreement on payment for the rights to the adaptation. The developer will pay to maintain a good relationship with the writer. They have found a legal hole that will allow the creator to collect royalties on the sales of the games.

Last October the news came out that Andrezj Sapkowski was preparing a lawsuit against CD Projekt RED. The writer believed that the Polish developer owed him money for the sales of The Witcher games based on his book series. For its part, the developer commented that they had already reached a one-time payment agreement for the use of the license given that the author did not expect the games to sell a lot and therefore preferred a higher payment in advance.

The royalties Andrezj Sapkowski deserved

After a few months of legal negotiations, the writer and developer have reached an agreement. His conclusion is that the contract for the advance payment for the use of the universe created by Sapkowski only applied to the first game of The Witcher, released in 2007. That means that the installments of The Witcher II: Assassin of Kings and The Witcher III : Wild Hunt, were made without the consent of the writer.

That's when they were able to negotiate a new royalty license. Its exact amount has not transpired, but it is known that it will be a proportion of the profits generated by its games and DLCs such as blood and Wine.

CD Projekt RED is delighted to pay this amount to the writer who has generated the universe that today is an important part of the world of video games. Not to lose the relationship with Andrezj Sapkowski and that is why they have reached that agreement. Now, it remains to be seen if after these events they decide to expand the world of The Witcher with other installments after the end of Cyberpunk 2077 or if they will abandon it.
