Half-Life receives a mod to play it with Ray Tracing
Here we know well about the original Half-Life, one of the most important releases in history by showing a story without cinematics that cut the player in an interactive environment that was the envy of the sector. Thanks to this, Valve made a name for itself and was able to push Steam as a prerequisite for playing Half-Life 2, and the rest is history.
The 1998 version of Half-Life is still playable, as it's available on Steam and virtually impossible for a modern computer not to run it. In addition, mods that add ray tracing to games that didn't originally have it, and don't necessarily need to, such as Quake, Doom, and Minecraft , are becoming increasingly popular, and the original Half-Life has received it as well.
If you want to replay Half-Life, you can do it with Ray Tracing
This Valve masterpiece has just received a mod from modder Sultim Tsyrendashiev. This is a ray tracing plug-in for Half-Life, bringing a modern illumination to a game from 25 years ago.
For those unfamiliar with how ray tracing changes the lighting in a game from 25 years ago, it allows graphics hardware to simulate the physical properties of light to generate realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections. It's a computationally expensive process, but convenient for developers who don't have to create lighting maps. Video cards have been powerful enough until recent generations, and while ray tracing could be enabled, it resulted in a significant performance hit.
Half-Life 1 predates ray tracing by decades, but Tsyrendashiev has managed to update the lighting, just as he did with Doom, Quake, and other classic games in previous projects. To try it out, you need the original game , which is easily obtainable legally through Steam.
Tsyrendashiev provides instructions on GitHub for running the mod. You need to extract the mod files and copy them into your Half-Life folder. It's worth noting that the textures, character models, and animations will be the same as in the 1998 version, but the lighting will be significantly different and can be changed with the press of a button. The mod developer recommends using an Nvidia RTX card, as AMD's ray tracing performance is inferior, and advises against using custom maps.
