Intel XeSS upscaling will improve the performance of all GPUs

Intel's Tom Petersen and Ryan Shrout have provided new information about Intel Arc graphics cards. This time, they've given an in-depth analysis of the upcoming Intel XeSS technology, which will be Intel's answer to Nvidia's DLSS, the image upscaling technology designed to deliver better gaming performance without requiring hardware upgrades.

As they have shown in the tests, even taking into account that they are official and not independent, it could be a huge leap in performance. It was initially scheduled for release on May 20, after first being announced in 2021. Like the Intel Arc GPUs themselves, the Intel XeSS has been a long time coming, but now they are preparing to launch it properly.

Intel XeSS promises and already has an arrival date

In the video, Intel explains that it wants to achieve " the best of both worlds " with XeSS. This means fast rendering and high resolutions. To achieve this, it plans to use AI to power the supersampling process. It's worth noting that Intel XeSS will feature four modes: Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced, and Performance.

Ultra quality mode will focus on image quality as opposed to frames per second. The following options will focus more on performance and image fluidity than on quality.

To showcase Intel XeSS technology paired with an Arc GPU, they played Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Both systems used similar computers with the Arc A770 and ran the game with ray tracing enabled at 1440p and maximum settings. One system used balanced mode, while the other played at native resolution without supersampling. Using XeSS resulted in a tangible performance boost: with XeSS, they achieved up to 80 fps in balanced mode, compared to a stable 50 fps without it. Performance mode further increased these figures, reaching up to 2,11 times the frame rate. It is expected to be available on November 8th.

Intel plans to make XeSS open to all developers to facilitate its integration. They have also partnered with the creators of the 3DMark benchmark to create a new tool called the XeSS Feature Test. This tool will be available for all graphics cards, not just Intel Arc, and will highlight the advantages of XeSS by offering a comparison of image quality and performance.
