The Epic Games Store will not accept "shit games", according to its CEO
The CEO of Epic Games says they can't stop people from making harmful games with their engine. But those games will have no place in the Epic Games Store.
Steam has been having a lot of complaints over the past few years about its policy of allowing any game to be sold on the store. There are so many poor quality games made by scammers who want to take advantage of the system, that many developers say it hardly pays to put games on Steam anymore. Epic Games doesn't want to get to that point with their Epic Games Store.
Everything in the Epic Games Store must have a minimum of quality
Sweeney said that any game that is going to be released on the store will be reviewed by Epic Games' team like they would review a movie theater before deciding which movies to show in their theaters. In his words, "We're not going to accept shitty games, we're going to accept games of reasonable quality, from small indies to AAA." They're happy with a game with content like Grand Theft Auto would have.
But they will draw the line at pornographic games, bloatware, "asset flips" and games made to gain publicity thanks to controversies that flood Steam. In his defense against attacks from defenders of these games, he said that since the PC is an open platform, they can find these games elsewhere.
These statements make clear reference to the game Rape Day that tried to be sold on Steam and led Valve to announce that they will not sell such a game due to the risks that would entail. For now Epic Games is off to a very good start and is securing exclusive titles to engage their store with players. But it remains to be seen if within several years they will have a high demand from developers who want to publish their games there and have to start being more lax with their quality control.
