48 minutes of Minecraft with Ray Tracing

Two videos of Minecraft with NVIDIA RayTracing technology have been published, which let us see how deep the improvement in graphic quality will be.

This past week during Gamescom many games have been presented by NVIDIA are RayTracing. The company is putting a lot of effort to maximize the catalog of games that support this technology. Most of the games featured are yet to come, but there is one on the market that will receive RayTracing. We are talking about Minecraft, which will receive light ray tracing in 2020.

NVIDIA has shown us a short trailer that shows that three or four things need to be improved in this regard. Despite the lack of polishing, the game's graphic quality improves a lot and becomes more interesting. And it is that RayTracing, although it is still a minority, is a technology that has come to stay.

Various Minecraft gameplay with RayTracing thanks to NVIDIA

Gamersryde has managed to get 18 minutes of the game under RayTracing. On the other hand, we have DigitalFoundry that also has a 30-minute video. The truth is that these videos show the great improvement of Minecraft with this new technology.

Mojang will implement shadows, ambient occlusion and reflections in Minecraft, so he will not use RayTracing completely either. The team will use a plotter to handle everything, so there is no rasterization. We will see ambient lighting in real time and the Glowstone and lava will illuminate the environments with more precision. On the other hand, water, video and other reflective surfaces will offer much more accurate reflections. Shadows will also be improved.

Both Mojang and NVIDIA have only limited themselves to saying that RayTracing will arrive in 2020. To enjoy this technology we will need a Windows 10 computer and an NVIDIA RTX Turing. Logically, this patch will run under DirectX 12, which is the only API at the moment that offers support for light ray tracing.
