Video Games

Many players want there to be more games that represent the diversity and inclusiveness of players like Apex Legends.

Out of more than two thousand players, half of them consider it important that there is more than the classic Caucasian male. Almost half say they would be more interested in a game that represents their race or orientation well.

The successful Apex Legends is a success and millions of players are making Fortnite not the king of battle royale. There are many theories about how it is so popular, and one of them is the diversity of characters, based on not having only characters with white skin. And a survey done last year supports this theoretical decision.

Apex Legend is interesting because it has female and LGBT characters

A notable section of players have been vocal about Apex Legends including non-normative characters in an attempt to be “politically correct,” but an internal study by Electronic Arts says this is important to many players. Last year, they conducted a survey of 2.250 gamers between the ages of 13 and 54. They asked a number of questions about representation in video games.

For those respondents, 56% said it's important for games to be inclusive, 31% stayed neutral, and the remaining 13% said it doesn't matter. Hence it follows that for a notable part of the public, inclusion and having something more than white men is important, for example, not to perpetuate the image of the heterosexual white man as a character in video games. On this inclusion, he gave examples of having character creators with different skin tones and body types, stories based on the real world that take into account different cultures, chats that promote healthy conversations and options for players who require special needs. The need for the latter is being exposed by the Game Makers Toolkit channel in a series of videos on how to make games that take into account players with motor problems, eyesight, hearing or are sensitive to flickering light.

Of those surveyed, 45% say they would be more likely to play a game that is more inclusive. But they don't want them to be inclusive "to meet quotas" because what they really want is for the representation and diversity to be sincere and of quality. The voices that say they wouldn't play games with diversity represent a minority. Respondents also have a second concern about toxicity in gaming communities and think that nothing has been done about it in recent years.

What does this have to do with Apex Legends? The survey was carried out by Electronic Arts, who own the rights to Apex Legends, a game that presents the diversity of races and sexual orientations that these players want. The survey was done a year ago so it is not difficult to think that it has had some impact on Apex Legends when creating the characters.
