Overwatch 2 will be totally free and its early access comes out this October

With Microsoft's almost confirmed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, a major paradigm shift was expected at the company. One of Blizzard's key releases is Overwatch 2, which aims to recapture the interest the series enjoyed years ago . A key element of this strategy will be making Overwatch 2 free-to-play.

Although in the absence of knowing which sections will be free, since it was known months ago that the PvE mode will be paid but the multiplayer is free for those who had the original Overwatch. Now it seems that all of Overwatch 2 will be free, but if there are any changes, it will be known.

You can play Overwatch 2 for free, and there will be early access

This announcement came during Microsoft's Xbox + Bethesda Showcase broadcast. Alongside numerous announcements of new games, such as Hideo Kojima 's upcoming title , updates for Microsoft Flight Simulator, and the 12-month release of Diablo IV, this information regarding Overwatch was revealed.

An early access period was also confirmed, which will start on October 4. Although the purchase of Microsoft is on the way, that will not prevent the game from reaching other platforms, since it has been confirmed for PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch. Crossplay and cross-progression have been confirmed, most likely linked to our Battle.net account. There will be a new character, Junker Queen, new maps, and the new game mode.

More information on how Overwatch will deal with this monetization change to becoming game-as-a-service is expected in a separate stream on June 16. There you will know in more detail everything there is to know about Overwatch 2, what it means that it is going to be a free game, and how they are going to include content to keep users playing.

Player retention is one of the biggest problems Overwatch faces . For years, it has been losing regular players, especially with the introduction of new characters that make the game more difficult for opponents, and the strategy that can be reduced to using three tanks and three healers. That's why one of the main changes in Overwatch 2 will be a change in team composition, switching to 5v5 instead of 6v6. In addition, the focus will be on PvE, among other things, to create more and better player-versus-computer events and a Horde Mode to try to advance the game's storyline, which has barely progressed since the first game's release six years ago.
