Cities Skylines was used by a Norwegian television to implement the decision-making of political candidates.
The electoral campaign for municipalities and localities in Norway is currently underway. The television campaign is important because it is the medium that voters consult the most. To test the policies of various candidates, the chain decided to test them with the use of the city management game Cities Skylines.
Cities Skylines can be an electoral test
As part of local media coverage, a Norwegian state broadcaster has organised an event where three medium-sized Norwegian cities have been recreated as Cities Skylines maps to be managed by a team of three people. They were given challenges such as “improving their electrical capacity” and “expanding public transport capacity”.
From a separate study, local and national politicians provided feedback on the teams' decisions and reflected on what the challenges of implementing those ideas would look like in the real world. It is not that the politicians were playing games but the politicians commented on what the policies would be like to face different problems and promotion plans. It is surprising that they have used a video game in such a serious environment instead of demonizing them.
Because... Who hasn't played one of these games and thought it would be a good idea to have a national television debate in which Pablo Iglesias, Pablo Casado, Albert Rivera and Pedro Sánchez played SimCity 2000 to put their policies to the test? and see which ones represent an improvement in the quality of life of citizens? All refereed by someone as impartial as a video game that sets very clear rules and objectives. The idea is free, TVE and Atresmedia, given that the possibility of repeated elections is approaching.
