Minecraft is the second best-selling game in August in the US, which has 112 million players

Minecraft was launched ten years ago, but it is still the king of video games, being the second best-selling game in the US and with 117 million players.

Getting a game to sell millions of copies is quite complex, unless it's a AAA title. Even so, top games tend to have a relatively short lifespan, selling very well for a few months. The GTA V phenomenon isn't easy to replicate; the game continues to sell well and has a huge player base. But nothing compares to Minecraft.

Mojang in 2009 launched a curious cube-based game in an open world where your imagination set the limits. The game quickly became a mass phenomenon and is still very popular today. So much so that it continues to sell strongly and there are millions of players who enjoy it every day.

Despite the game being 10 years old, Minecraft is still very much alive.

According to NPD Group this past August, Minecraft has become the second best-selling title in the United States. The best-selling game has been Madden NFL 20, which is no surprise. But that Minecraft is the second best-selling game in August and the thirteenth best-selling game so far this year in the US is amazing.

In addition, Minecraft being available on many platforms, it sells well and there are many users who play it. According to the revealed figure, it would be around 112 million monthly users. To put it in context, Fortnite in August 2018 had 78 million players and Roblox about 100 million players.

Note that Minecraft is the typical game that you give a lot of time to and leave it, to return (I confess that it has happened to me and I dedicate some time to it lately). So Microsoft's decision to take over Mojang is a wise move. The company has taken it into the education sector. It has also integrated it into the HoloLens and they have opted for augmented and virtual reality in the game. Microsoft has certainly helped keep it very popular.
