The Outer Worlds: Microsoft sees it as a future exclusive franchise
The Outer Worlds will be released on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, but its future may be limited to what Microsoft says. It all depends on how they want to leverage their ownership of Obsidian.
Last year Microsoft announced that it had acquired developer Obsidian Entertainment. This implies that the catalog of Obsidian's own games was going to pass into the hands of Microsoft if they were not tied to another production company, and this is the case of The Outer Worlds whose future may be exclusive to Microsoft platforms.
An exclusive franchise for Microsoft is coming
We know that The Outer Worlds is going to be released on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and even Nintendo Switch since it is produced in part by Private Division. But since Obsidian owns the franchise and Microsoft owns Obsidian Entertainment as part of its first party team, the franchise is owned by the Redmond company.
This means that future installments of The Outer Worlds, if the game is successful; They will be owned by Microsoft and they will decide on which platforms they will come out. It is clear that yes or yes they would come out on Xbox One, Xbox Scarlett and the Windows Store of PC.
And other consoles? It depends on whether Microsoft sees benefit in releasing it on competing platforms. They have taken out Minecraft on more consoles aside from Xbox One since Microsoft acquired Mojang, and Sony allowed Quantic Dream to release its games on PC. It all depends on what Microsoft thinks is best to profit from its acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment.
