HBO renews The Last of Us series for a second season

The series of the moment right now is The Last of Us, based on the eponymous game from Sony Interactive Entertainment and Naughty Dog. Without a doubt, it is one of the most anticipated adaptations, given that it had the potential to remove a certain stigma regarding adaptations based on video games in the eyes of the majority public. As in its day, The Last of Us helped to remove the stigma that video games were simple entertainment before people who had ignored them for years.

And The Last of Us series lived up to the expectations of both fans and those who haven't played the game. It is one of the most watched series on HBO Max, only surpassed by The House of the Dragon, but we are talking about a series in the universe of Game of Thrones.

The Last of Us on HBO will tell the story of the second part

Given such success, it is not surprising that a second season of The Last of Us took little time to be confirmed. As we already know, the first season tells the story of the first game. They are still in the first episodes, but HBO is already envisioning the success of the second season, and has the green light to start pre-production.

In the confirmation announcement of this second season, they have commented that the events of The Last of Us Part II will be shown. It is not known when this second season is expected to come out, but it could come out as soon as mid-2024, now that HBo has already done much of the pre-production of the series, such as casting and base art design, and I could do the second season in about a little over a year between shooting and editing.

How successful has it been? More than 22 million viewers in the United States have watched the premiere episode of the first season to date. The first episode had its premiere in with 4,7 million viewers, its second had 5,7 million viewers via HBO Max and linear television. It is to be expected that this number will grow or at least remain in quite positive figures, taking into account that fewer and fewer people watch linear television and choose to watch the series at their own pace, which is the reason for the big difference between live and deferred viewers.
