Dark Souls servers have been closed due to an exploit that could affect Elden Ring

Over the weekend, Bandai Namco and From Software announced that all dark souls servers Remastered, 2 and 3 were temporarily closed due to a “problem with online services.” Although the publisher did not share further details, it is known that last Friday a user found an exploit that grants Remote Code Execution privileges through the Souls series multiplayer invasion system.

Put simply, all-Dark Souls multiplayer could allow an attacker to take control of another player's PC who has invaded. Since code reuse is very common in game development, it is quite possible that this exploit is also inadvertently found in Elden Ring, which hits the market in just one month.

Serious Dark Souls Exploit Compromises Elden Ring

News of this issue first surfaced on the Elden Ring subreddit, where the RCE exploit was publicly disclosed. An RCE flaw allows an attacker to execute code on another machine remotely, essentially giving them full control of the PC. Although the news broke on the Elden Ring subreddit, since the game hasn't been released yet, there's still time for the bug to be fixed before it launches next month.

But since the error is also present throughout the Dark Souls trilogy on PC, the servers for those games have been taken offline for the time being. This bug only affects dark souls pc versions, Dark Souls II, and Dark Souls III, so it does not affect console versions of Dark Souls games.

If the bug is present in Elden Ring, it should be fixed in time for the February 25 release, but if not, we could see a situation where multiplayer features are disabled for the PC version at launch while console users enjoy it without issue. From Software has publicly acknowledged the issue and is actively working on a fix, but there is no timeline yet.
