Betehsda opens official servers for Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, a game from 2003
Bethesda Softworks has announced that will host dedicated servers for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, a classic game recently released for free on Steam and the Microsoft Store. This makes it possible to play the game again without the need to install mods or access unofficial servers, and a great effort to preserve the game.
Splash Damage's Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory game was first released in 2003, which means they've put servers on a game that's almost twenty years old. It is important, since the game, although it has a campaign, its strong point was the online mode, an element that was enormously attractive at that time given the fanaticism that Counter-Stike had raised, this being a Half-Life mod.
Online returns to a game from twenty years ago
Now, nearly 20 years after its release, Bethesda has rolled out new servers dedicated to the online multiplayer shooter. the official servers run the Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory campaign ruleset, including the six original maps and without mods.
This move is clearly a very positive one on Bethesda's part. The game is already free on Steam and the Microsoft Store, and the servers don't have a paywall, essentially giving the game away for free. It is true that it is not an innovative game or one of the great exponents of the genre, but can give many hours of fun, especially those users without a graphics card, who use integrated graphics or have a really old graphics card. There is a reason why many people still play Counter Strike version 1.6, because it consumes the least resources and any PC with certain integrated graphics can move, in addition to having a large community.
There are currently four official servers covering the United States, the European continent, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Bethesda hasn't mentioned if servers will launch in more regions in the future. The game is now also available on the Microsoft Store, where it can also be downloaded for free, with support for dedicated servers. In the end, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory is a free game, taking advantage of the fact that it was already finished and they only had to put it in stores and give it official server support.
