Iron Lung rebounds in sales due to the event of the Titan submarine that was approaching the Titanic
A few hours ago, it was known that the oxygen in the Titan submarine had run out, which led several millionaires to come to see the remains of the Titanic through a webcam at a price of $250.000 per pass. Since it was known that they had lost the possibility of returning to the surface several days ago, the internet and social networks have been filled with comments about it.
But above all there has been an event: sales of the Iron Lung game have rebounded on Steam, as if it were part of a very macabre joke. Now, why precisely that game and why is it possible that Iron Lung's sales in Steam have risen for having several millionaires trapped in a submarine from which they cannot escape?
From a small horror game to being referenced for getting too close to the reality of the Titan submarine
Iron Lung is a game where you drive a windowless, rusty submarine in an ocean of blood on a moon, and you must move through the ocean. It's really short and relatively cheap. Its popularity is mainly due to the youtuber Markiplier, who dedicated some videos to it, one of them with 7 million views, and others like Pyrocynical, Power Pak and more have videos that accumulate millions of views. In addition, said Markiplier has been producing a movie about the game for several months, which many believed to be an innocent, but it turns out to be a real movie.
Due to the enormous similarity between the game and the event of the Titan submarine, the comparisons and memes began. Many mentioned said game because both cases are of people trapped in, and because of the macabre publicity, supported by its short duration and low price, people have bought it on Steam.
Its creator David Szymanski, known for being also the developer of "boomer shooter» DUSK, and developing Gloomwood, has commented on this effect on his Twitter account. He began by commenting in a humorous tone:Yes, mom, it's been a strange day. Well, it's a little hard to explain...» when he saw the game on Trends and then went through «this feels wrong» seeing the increase in sales on Steam. On a more serious note, he said the following:
I definitely see the dark humor in this whole Titanic submarine thing, it's just… I made Iron Lung the most nightmarish thing I could think of, and knowing that real people are in that situation right now is pretty horrible, even if they were their own bad decisions.
