World of Warcraft is no longer the most popular MMORPG, FFXIV is

After a fatal start, Final Fantasy XIV has ended up ousting World of Warcraft as the MMORPG with the most active population. Blizzard lost its throne in the sector.

When World of Warcraft was released, it marked a before and after in the world of MMORPGs. True, there were Everquest and Ultima Online, but Blizzard's MMORPG was able to attract many more players and be the king of the genre for years. And although it has lost popularity, it has not stopped being the most inhabited, until recently after being surpassed by Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

WoW is not the king of MMORPGs

As can be seen in the list of MMO Populations, World of Warcarft has more than 2 regular users now that the anticipation for Shadowlands has calmed down. Far from its 12 million users at its peak in popularity in 2010, but it still has a mass of loyal, regular and subscription paying players. Although Activision Blizzard has stopped reporting the number of players playing on Azeroth for years.

Similarly, two million players is not a negligible figure knowing that you have to pay a subscription. But MMORPG is losing regular players and now it is no longer the most played MMORPG, it is Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which has more than 2 185 regular players. A few thousand that take the top spot from World of Warcraft.

It should be said that Final Fantasy XIV was born as an outdated and inefficient MMORPG, but after being canceled and resurrected, little by little it has grown to the point where it is today. Whether due to its continuous updates, the stories of the world and its strong social component, it has been gaining players in a market that sees how it has less and less. Although this change in positions may be temporary and World of Wracraft returns to the top position. Or Blizzard may take note of what Square Enix is doing with its MMORPG and try to implement design changes in the world of Azeroth.
