USB 3.0 offers speeds of about 100MB / s, which is fine for a pen drive or a mechanical external hard drive, but for SSDs it is cutting the transfer speed, that's why USB 3.1 Type-C were developed that offer great speeds. Western Digital is aware that this is an important advance and that is why it has started to develop products based on this connector. The latest solution is the Western Digital G-Drive USB-C.
WD has developed this drive as a fixed drive, it is not a plug-and-play hard drive as it requires external power to operate. It could be a drawback, but WD has thought of a somewhat smart solution and that is that it works with laptop chargers, since its consumption is 45W. It should be noted that if we use USB-C we would not need to connect it, since it would supply us with the necessary energy, we would only need to connect it to the electrical current when we make USB-A, since it does not allow transferring files or voltage at the same time.
The WD G-Drive USB-C drive supports multiple connectivity such as Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.0, and USB 2.0. This hard drive would offer speeds of 195MB / s, something that would be sufficient for streaming content in 4K, although it does not exploit the full potential of USB-C. It would begin to be marketed in the summer in the United States initially and could reach more markets soon. It will arrive in three capacities, a 4TB for $ 200, an 8TB for $ 350 and a 10TB for $ 450.
