Western Digital presents its 12TB and 14 TB helium hard drives

The Western Digital company has just announced its new hard drives made with Helium of more than amazing capacities, 12TB and 14TB, which will be available in SAS and SATA versions for individual users as well as for companies. Although it seems that the brand also wants to position itself with SSDs as we have seen lately, they have not left the HDDs that have given them so many benefits.

The new 12TB Ultrastar HE12 from HGST (a WD subsidiary) has already begun shipping. It features a standard 7200 RPM HDD speed, offering solid read and write speeds. The 14TB HGST version will be available later this year with the same design and RPM, but will offer greater capacity thanks to a different technology: shingled magnetic recording . Both drives will have 256MB of cache, 8ms read seek times, and 8,6ms write seek times.

Shingled magnetic recording can be used to increase storage capacity by up to 25% by overlapping the written magnetic tracks. SMR technology will increase disk capacity but reduce write speeds, making the product less suitable for applications requiring frequent data writes.
