This drop could be due to the fact that part of the world is already in 2018, so the network would have collapsed at one of those times of the year where hundreds of messages and photos are sent and received.

Downdetector, a very useful website at the moment, shows how thousands of users are reporting a crash of the popular application around the world. WhatsApp is falling in much of Central Europe and Spain. There are also coverage problems in the service in Argentina, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Peru and other countries, so the failure is global, leaving much of the planet without service, although there are areas where it seems to work, relatively well.

The problem is affecting the sending and receiving of messages, so the application servers could have crashed and the service would be re-mounting. You should not despair if no messages arrive and you see the waiting clock all the time, it is not the fault of your terminal or the internet, it is the application. There are problems viewing videos or images and downloading these contents is not possible, due to the crash. It is possible that the service will be restored shortly, resetting the systems and connecting additional servers, but who knows if we can congratulate ourselves through the application, since as you well know, they are not especially transparent from the application and never report the falls and the reasons for it.
