Generation Z prefers to play video games much more than watch television or movies
A new Deloitte Digital Media Trends survey shows that Gen Z consumers in the United States, those who are currently between the ages of 14 and 24; they continue a long-established trend that younger Americans lose interest or give less priority to watching television over video games. 26% of respondents say they prefer video games to anything else in their media consumption habits.
87% in that age group also say they play video games on a daily or weekly basis. When asked to rank their preferred entertainment activities, respondents ranked video games number one, while watching TV or movies at home ranked fifth.
Video games have a higher priority among young people
According to Deloitte Media, only 10% of Generation Z respondents said watching TV or movies was their favorite form of entertainment, compared to video games. For all other age groups, video games remain the top choice, including among millennials (18%), Gen Xers (29%), and baby boomers (39%).
According to Variety, the prevailing wisdom and expectation regarding these trends was that millennials would " age " in their interest in video games as they grew older and became more like their elders. But that hasn't happened, and there's no reason for Generation Z to follow suit and abandon video games.
The report warns that this data has been collected during the pandemic, during the time of confinements in which a lot of entertainment is needed and the use of video games has grown enormously. It is expected when the pandemic ends, the reported data may change. It is possible that if asked several months later, many who have recently answered that they prefer video games will say that they now prefer outdoor activities or social gatherings.
