One of the reasons for the significant delay is the switch to a new engine that will allow them to realize their more ambitious vision for the game, along with numerous changes to make it more appealing to all types of players. Years after its initial announcement, an Overwatch 2 multiplayer PvP beta is coming in a few weeks.

They require you to have Battle.net activated and an active account , and they will most likely prioritize those who played the original Overwatch the most hours. However, the beta will probably focus more on testing the game, the engine, the maps, the characters, and more to make the necessary changes.
Overwatch 2 will start a beta next month
They've announced that this beta will feature the new 5v5 game mode , a change from the original game's 6v6. This is most likely because they observed that the most optimal winning strategy involved teams with three healers and three tanks, making almost any other strategy unviable. Forcing players to be two DPS, two healers, and two tanks was a disadvantage for both casual and professional players.
This will be the first time players can use the new hero Sojourn, and there will be reworks for Orisa, Doomfist, Bastion, and Sombra . These four were heavily criticized for slowing down gameplay, causing long stuns, or preventing the use of abilities for a significant portion of the match. Blizzard has been working for years on ways to reduce the power of more complex heroes over simpler ones, so the heroes we encounter will be very different from those we've played for years.
There will be four new maps, two of which will feature a new game mode, and a new ping system. This is what the Overwatch 2 PvP-focused beta should offer. This doesn't mean the game will be released soon, as it doesn't yet have a confirmed release date, or even a specific year, and there have been numerous problems during development.
